My story
Frishta Children?s Village are a small UK charity formed by a group of friends who wanted to do something practical to help Indian street children and orphans. Since 2005 we have been sponsoring disadvantaged children in Punjab, paying for their school fees, uniforms, books and giving them supplemental food.
There is a high proportion of Dalits in Punjab and there are additional hardships for girl children where boys are culturally and economically preferred. According to a recent report the number of girls born and surviving has hit an all time low; in one area of Punjab, there are just 30 girls to every 100 boys. Even if they survive birth, girls are seen as a burden and often do not start or complete their schooling.
As the needs are so great, Frishta are constructing a purpose-built children's village. It will have great potential for providing a fresh start for orphaned and disadvantaged children and also facilities for the local community. Besides the small family homes for 10-12 children we will also have a Medical Clinic, Learning Centre, plus sports and play facilities. Places in the homes will be offered free, based on need, not gender, caste, religion or race.
A children's home costs £30,000 to build. Please give as much as you can!
Frishta: Giving Indian street children a home, an education, a hope and a future.
