Isobel McVicar is raising money for Community H.E.A.R.T

My story

Friends and comrades will be very sad to hear of the passing away of Danny Gillespie, a committed and active trade unionist, an internationalist and Celtic supporter, and their thoughts will be with his wife Debbie and family at this sad time.

As an active trade unionist he was always there for his members in any time of difficulty and willing to help and support younger activists when it was needed which many will attest to. A Nalgo and UNISON activist for decades he served at every level of the trade union and will be missed by the many friends he had in the movement. As an internationalist Danny supported many of the liberation struggles such as the Anti-Apartheid Movement and he helped to ensure his trade union's support for these struggles.

In 1995, a year after the first democratic elections in South Africa, Danny's support for the newly launched charity Community H.E.A.R.T. helped to bring much needed funds for the fledgling organisation. His internationalist outlook meant he was well aware that the end of apartheid was not the end of the struggle. Community H.E.A.R.T., set up by Denis Goldberg who was one of the Rivonia Trialists, supports the South African people in their struggle to overcome the legacy of apartheid.

Danny's family are asking friends and comrades who wish to commemorate his passing to consider donating to Community H.E.A.R.T. to recognise his commitment to international solidarity.
