12th Paras 10 for JJMF

Event date: 6th September 2015

Steve Coles is raising money for JJ's Memorial Fund

My story

On Sunday 6th September I will be doing my 12th Paras 10 , which is all events to date since the Paras 10 re-started in 2008. Apparently I am the only person to have achieved this.

The event is as follows:For those seeking an even tougher race: The Parachute Regiment challenges you to attempt the 10 Mile 'P' Company Cross Country Route, carrying a bergen (rucksack) weighing 35lb (excluding food water) and wearing long trousers with 'military style' boots. Competitors rucksacks will be weighed before and after the race, by race officials. As a guide the Paratroopers P Company Selection cut off time is 1 hr 50 minutes (you will be given up to 3hrs if needed).

My reason for doing this is after meeting a friend Andy N in May 2008 who had been seriously injured in Afghanistan.I felt compelled to help him and many others by way of fundraising. Then on 12th June of the same year Private Jeff Doherty was killed whilst on operations in Afghanistan with C Coy 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment , 2 days after his 20th birthday. He was a local lad and I knew the family which made my resolve even stronger.

My 12th Paras10 will be dedicated to the 12 members of 2 Para who lost their lives whilst serving in Afghanistan and to Stu Pearson 3 Para, who nine years to the day of the event was severely injured losing his left leg above the knee on operations at Kajaki Dam where he lost his friend Corporal Mark Wright. Despite Stu's injuries he has undertaken a considerable amount of fundraising and will be taking part in the Paras 10 on the 9th anniversary of "That Day".
This is an extremely challenging event and I will continue to do these for as long as possible in an effort to support all the blokes who have been injured and the families of those killed in action. Please support me if you can. Thanks
