Giving hope for Christmas

clare is raising money for Uzima in our Hands

My story

Uzima is an amazing place which provides education and food to 300 children in a remote part of Western Kenya. The children are some of the most vulnerable in the world - they live in abject poverty. Most are orphans having lost one or both parents to diseases such as HIV. Last Christmas my family donated enough money to buy re-usable sanitary pads for all the girls and women at Uzima. I gave them out on my visit there in February. Having those pads means that girls can continue with their education uninterrupted and can be confident of better hygiene and reduced risk of infection.
When we were in Uzima this year we learned that the older children (16 - 18 years ) needed to be able to continue with their education so that they could gain vocational training skills in order to be able to earn a living. Without this they have little hope of prospering as they reached school leaving age. Girls in particular are at risk of falling into a life of prostitution in order to earn enough money to support themselves and often their younger siblings. I met women who had become mothers as young as 13 and were bringing up a family and struggling to feed themselves and their children. Men struggle too - but are more able to leave and seek work in the city or their culture often allows them to abandon family when things become too difficult. But I also met a girl called Dorkas who was bright, and benefiting from being educated and fed by Uzima. She lived with her three younger siblings and her older sister. Her older sister cared for the younger ones but earned money by selling herself to men. By providing vocational training Dorkas has half a chance of escaping this cycle of abuse and poverty.
Please be generous and help us to build and equip three classrooms which will be used to teach such skills as sewing, metalwork, cooking, agriculture. When we left Kenya at the end of February we started this campaign and needed £50,000. We've now raised £28,000. Can we raise another £1000 towards our target this Christmas?
The picture is of one of the staff, Rachael, who taught the youngest children. She was always immaculately turned out with fantastic hair! She worked full time and brought up her own children in their mud hut. Her husband had died of of AIDS. Her little girl was called Joy - named after Uzima trustee Joy Mowle. This week we learned that Joy had died of cerebral malaria.
