Description:
Special Olympics Great Britain is the major year-round sport training provider of sporting opportunities for people with an intellectual disability focusing on providing equality of opportunity for all athletes regardless of their level of athletic ability, from the age of eight years and upwards.
It is a volunteer based organization, with 135 local branches and provides year-round sports training in a variety of Olympic-type sports for over 8000 children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate achievement, experience enjoyment and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families and other athletes.
There are almost 1.2 million people in Great Britain with intellectual disabilities. They face discrimination and marginalisation in most aspects of their lives and they lack access to the same level of opportunity to lead well-rounded lives due to the stigma they face from wider society.
As a year-round provider of sports training and regular competition at local, regional, national and international level, we aim to have sustainable and long term impact upon the athletes and communities in which we work; we provide the opportunity for our athletes to participate in sport throughout their lives so that people with intellectual disabilities can always continue to build upon their confidence and challenge themselves.
