My story
We only have 10 years left to save the red squirrel from extinction on mainland England.
Funding to provide red squirrel conservation, community engagement, and the strategic control of the non-native, American grey squirrel, runs out in June 2010.
The grey squirrel carries a disease, squirrelpox virus, which is invariably fatal to red squirrels. There is no cure, and no vaccine in sight for at least 10 years. If the government does not fund a protection programme over this period (which currently looks unlikely), the future of this iconic British mammal is dependent on the generosity of YOU, the British people.
The cost of saving the red squirrel from complete extinction in its last strongholds in the North of England will be in the region of £5.5 million over a 10 year period.
We need to secure funds to cover at least 3 years of operations by 30th June 2010, else all the work we have done over the previous 4 years will have been in vain.
