On Sunday 8th July I am helping to organise and take part in a sponsored Walk in aid of the Biggin Hill Romania Group.

This registered charity (1006937) was founded in 1990 for the purpose of:

The relief of poverty and sickness, The advancement of education, The improvement in care facilities for children living in institutions, for residents of Comanesti and its environs, N.E. Romania.

From 1997 onward the charity extended their objectives to:

The provision of education, speech and physiotherapy for physically and mentally disabled children, the integration into society of physically and mentally disabled children, the preparation of disadvantaged young people for taking their place in the world of work, the enabling of disadvantaged young people to take their place in the community as independent, caring and responsible adults.

I know personally many of the people involved in the charity and have witnessed first hand and been inspired by the tireless efforts they go to in order to make a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged and disabled children of Comanesti.

People may think that now Romania is in the European Union it shouldn't need help like this, but that would certainly be untrue in Comanesti, where from information within the most recently published census:

23,796 population 803 individuals receive social aid 2,413 families receive social aid 7,500 people became unemployed between 1997-2005 40.6% of unemployed receive social payments 59.4% of unemployed do not receive any kind of income In addition, floods in July 2005 meant: 85 houses destroyed 59 houses disappeared 205 houses flooded 2,500 houses damaged 560 people evacuated The desperation would be worse without outside help!

Any sponsorship monies would be gratefully received and put to wonderful use.
