Uganda Hands for Hope is a non-profit organization working with the residents of Kampala's informal urban settlements. We assist the most vulnerable by providing opportunities to acquire the necessary skills to help themselves and their community, focusing mainly on the needs of local women and children.

Starting with just 8 children and one volunteer teacher, Uganda Hands for Hope now supports and educates 140 children spread between 2 nurseries and 1 primary school. Children who would otherwise have had no chance of an education and life outside the daily grind of slum life.

Following this rapid growth in numbers, Joseph Cummiskey Founder and Director, invited myself, Mike Nutt a volunteer Doctor (GP) from England under the sponsorship of Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM) to come and set up a health clinic offering quality but subsidized affordable health care for the children and families. A total of 496 children and adults are now benefiting from the Clinic.

Thanks to generous donations from family and friends the Clinic has now successfully opened (see pictures). We are in the process of extending the ?membership? of the clinic to the orphans and vulnerable children looked after by local organizations.

Our small charges are essential to enable the patients whom we support access medical care. (Even the government run clinics often do not have the right medicines and tell the parent to go and buy the medicine.) These small charges cover the cost of us buying the medicine with any left over for helping out parents whose children need operations or other hospital care. They do not however cover the wages for Margaret, the local Ugandan Nurse who I am training to take over the clinic when I leave in July. Her wages are not expensive and total less than £90 per month.

Any small contribution you can make towards this I would be delighted to receive as this will guarantee the clinic remains for the future of the poorest of the poor here.
