Uganda Hands for Hope is a non-profit organisation working with residents of Kampala's informal settlements, primarily in Namuwongo. We pride ourselves on having a close working relationship with our beneficiaries and for our "hands-on" approach to our work. Our programmes focus mainly on the needs of local women and children, including education, health, and development of sustainable livelihoods. We assist the most vulnerable by providing opportunities to acquire the necessary skills to help themselves and their community.

VMM, a UK Registered Charity, supports Uganda Hands for Hope's work in numerous ways, one of which is acting as the UK charity to receive funds on our behalf and enabling us to receive Gift Aid from supporters donations whenever it is possible to do so. This support is certainly making a massive difference to work we are able to achieve.

Uganda Hands For Hope

Our History

Uganda Hands for Hope was started in early 2008 to support the most vulnerable children and families in Uganda. By the same time the following year, the organisation had transformed from one person in a home office to an ever-growing staff working on the front lines of poverty reduction in one of Kampala's largest and poorest slums. As an organisation in tune with the constant flux of the modern world, 'Uganda Hands for Hope' has been changing rapidly - with an increasing number of staff and volunteers and with funding from all over the world. While our goal is large in impact, the organisation has remained small in size in order to maintain the personal community involvement that has become the trademark of 'Uganda Hands for Hope'. By mid 2009, 'Uganda Hands for Hope' has had an inspiring positive influence on the community:

1. Nearly 200 sponsored children are going to school

2. More than 50 woman have been given small loans through our micro-finance programme

3. More than 100 vulnerable young children attend our nursery

With the basic groundwork laid, Uganda Hands for Hope has its sights set on the further growth of its own operations and the sustainable development of the communities it serves.

Uganda Hands for Hope, with the support from its many friends, is planning to build a school and vocational training centre to provide essential education and support for the hundreds of vulnerable children in need of a chance of an education. We are looking for individuals and groups who are interested to get involved in various fund raising events and activities so we can collectively provide some of this much needed support.

The school is to primarily support those children currently living in the poorest slum in Kampala, Namuwongo. The school is aiming to provide first quality education with an supportive working and living environment to enable children to be able to study effectively. The initial plans are to purchase 20 acres of land on the outskirts of the city and to build the first stage which is a primary school for upto 400 children. Individuals or groups can fund raise for different aspects of the planned school, making it possible for individuals to take on a fund raising event for a more specific and more achievable task, i.e. an event to raise money for the construction of one classroom or maybe the construction of a school play ground etc.

We are always keen to hear from any individual or groups who wish to come and visit or volunteer and meet the children and families being supported.
