About The Bishop's Palace & Gardens
The Bishop's Palace & Gardens is situated in the heart of the city of Wells. Built in 1206 the Grade 1 listed Palace is one of the oldest surviving and intact examples of a medieval Bishop's residence, having been occupied by the Bishop of Bath and Wells for the last 800 years. No less important are the 14 acres of surrounding gardens, which contain the prehistoric wells that give the city its name. The histories and stories surrounding the buildings and its Bishops are seldom found within the UK and are completely unique in the South West of England.
Today the Bishop's Palace is run by the Palace Trust, a registered charity whose purpose is to ensure the long term and sustainable future of this historically important site, so that it offers public benefit for generations to come. As well as conserving this extraordinary place, we also want to see it return to being a focal point of the local community, so that everyone who crosses the drawbridge can benefit from this beau...

It costs approximately £1,600 to keep the Bishop's Palace & Gardens open to the public every day. On top of that we need to raise additional funds to restore the 800 year old Palace, conserve it's unique contents, maintain the stunning grounds and provide an engaging visitor experience through our Learning and Community programme of activities.
