Tenovus the Cancer Charity

For over 40 years Tenovus has focussed on the delivery of care and support to cancer patients and their families, whilst also funding world class research into the causes, characteristics and cures for some of the most common forms of the disease. This pioneering research has lead to some of the worlds most remarkable breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer. This pioneering work all began in 1943, when ten Cardiff business men set up a charity in gratitude for the excellent treatment and care that one of their friends had received at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary. Little did they know that this humble, but noble, gesture would herald the birth of Wales largest cancer charity, Tenovus.

Tamoxifen has since gone on to become one of the world’s most successful breast cancer therapies saving the lives of an estimated 30% of all women diagnosed with the disease. Research at the Tenovus centre continues today, now focussing on why some breast cancers are more stubborn to treat than others. This vital research has already highlighted several new targets for therapy which could have huge implications for many of the tens of thousands of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year.

We deliver this through our team of Specialist Cancer Nurses, counsellors, social workers and welfare rights workers, who help thousands of families each year cope with the physical, emotional and financial cost of a cancer diagnosis.
