About Sumatran Orangutan Society

In the last 20 years, 80% of orangutan habitat has been destroyed. Every minute, an area of forest the size of six football fields is lost in Indonesia. With less than 6,650 surviving in the wild, it is predicted that the Sumatran orangutan will be the first Great Ape species to become extinct if current trends of forest loss continue.

Indonesia boasts some of the most biodiverse forests in the world, yet has more threatened mammal species than any other country. By preserving the orangutans? habitat, it is possible to ensure a future for other rare and precious wildlife such as the Sumatran elephant, tiger, rhinoceros and clouded leopard.

The Sumatran Orangutan Society works with local communities living alongside the last remaining orangutan habitat. We visit schools, hold conservation camps, plant trees and provide training to help these local people work towards a more sustainable future for their forests. plant rainforest tree seedlings in damaged areas of orangutan habitat; send our OranguVan mobile environmental education units out of the road to visit schools and communities living near the forests.
