Stephen Perse Gambia Project

Event date: 18th September 2011

Daisy Hutchison & Penelope (Nell) Dix is raising money for THE STEPHEN PERSE FOUNDATION

My story

17/09/11
Thank you to everyone so far for all your generous sponsorship. Unfortunately we learned late on Thursday that this year's race has had to be cancelled due to excess weed in the river (see britishrowing.org/news/boston-rowing-marathon-cancelled).

However, as an alternative we are planning to carry out a row from Cambridge to Ely and back again next Sunday (25th), which is conveniently a 50km round trip. We have regrettably had to postpone our row due to organising getting through the extra locks in our way and various safety concerns.

We hope that you feel this is an appropriate solution. Although we will not have other crews to compete against, we will definitely be putting in the same effort and I assure you we will feel just as stiff by the end!

Please do not hesitate to drop us an email if there are any queries or problems.

Daisy Hutchison and Penelope (Nell) Dix will be rowing the Boston marathon on Sunday the 18th September. 50km, on the River Witham between Lincoln and Boston, the marathon will take around 4.5 to 5 hours to complete. We are raising money for a trip to The Gambia in December that we are taking part in and we would really appreciate any support you can give, no matter how small or big. All funds raised will be used directly for improving people's lives in The Gambia, we will not be using any of this money for personal expenses.

The Stephen Perse Foundation has been involved in local projects in the Gambia for many years. Past projects have included building a well, kitchen/store and protective walls, painting class rooms and funding education. Currently we are helping to build and fund two chicken farms and a computer centre. In the future we aim to help the community to build a compound so that volunteers ands school groups can stay at the centre free of charge.

Thank you very much!
