About The Shropshire Union Canal Society
Was formed in 1966 to promote interest in the past, present and future of the 158 miles of canals that comprise the Shropshire Union system. These canals are an essential and beautiful part of the inland waterways network, and of tremendous social, environmental, historical and commercial importance. The Society is actively engaged in the ongoing restoration of the Montgomery Canal, and over the years has restored Pool Quay, Carreghofa, Burgedin, Brynderwen and Newhouse Locks and assisted in other restoration works elsewhere on the canal.
