About Sands, the stillbirth & neonatal death charity

In the UK, 17 babies a day are stillborn or die within the first twenty eight days of life: a devastating bereavement for the parents and for their families and friends. We offer support and information to parents and families whose baby has died.

We work with professionals to improve the care bereaved families receive after the death of their baby.

We are now widening our focus to promote research into the causes of stillbirths and neonatal deaths, and to press for changes in practice that could save more babies' lives.

Sands is a national organisation, established in 1978 and registered as a charity in 1981. We work throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and overseas. We have a small national staff team, and a large number of volunteers who offer support locally.

Legal description

(1) TO PROTECT THE HEALTH OF PARENTS AFFECTED BY THE STILLBIRTH OR OTHER PERINATAL OR NEONATAL DEATH OF THEIR CHILD OR CHILDREN AND, WHERE NECESSARY, TO RELIEVE OR ASSIST IN RELIEVING ANY MENTAL OR PHYSICAL ILLNESS SUFFERED BY SUCH PARENTS AS A RESULT THEREOF; (2) TO PROMOTE OR ASSIST IN PROMOTING RESEARCH INTO THE CAUSES, INCIDENCE AND EFFECTS OF STILLBIRTH OR OTHER PERINATAL OR NEONATAL DEATH AND INTO THE METHODS OF ALLEVIATING SUFFERING ARISING THEREFROM AND TO PUBLIC THE RESULTS OF SUCH RESEARCH.
