Khola aims to relieve poverty and improve social and environmental conditions in Nepal through fair trade. Trading in this way, we see how empowering it can be, particularly for people affected by leprosy and disadvantaged ladies. Alternative trading gives people more control and the chance to fulfill their potential and direct their own futures. All trading with the Kathmandu workshop is carried out with strict adherence to IFAT guidelines. Khola provides the Kathmandu office with design assistance and imports a small range of products for wholesale to UK gift shops. The direct link with the Kathmandu workshop ensures lower prices for Khola and therefore competitive prices for all compared to other fair trade wholesalers. They already make high quality textile and leather products for overseas buyers. The profit from the export orders funds the shop in Kathmandu, The Offices and workshop and the Hospital. Up until now NLT UK has been buying small quantities of products direct from Nepal and selling them at local fairs. The aim of the ‘khola’ brand is to provide a vehicle in which to wholesale to small high quality fair-trade and non-fair-trade retailers within the UK.
