Samantha Farrow is raising money for Guildford Cathedral
It turns out...that I said I would abseil from the Tower of Guildford Cathedral on Saturday 26 April as this architectural gem is now at serious risk of closure due to the deterioration of the acoustic plaster on the ceiling vaults.
In order to save this wonderful building and equip it to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century, they need to raise £7m. They must raise £1.3m by August 2014. This will enable the Cathedral to apply for a £4.5m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
My aim is to try and raise £1,000 in sponsorship and return safely to earth with my body, mind and dignity intact. I'm willing to pass on the last one.
History (theirs not mine)
Building work on the Cathedral started in1936, to a design by Sir Edward Maufe. But work was stopped by the Second World War and its devastating aftermath.
When building restrictions were lifted and materials were available again, there was a renewed sense of determination in the local community to complete the Cathedral. Work re-started again in 1954. More than 200,000 ordinary people became brick-givers. Their generosity helped ensure the completion of what they thought of as ?their Cathedral?. It was an extraordinary act of public support, a demonstration of modern community spirit.
I'd like in some small way to support that ideal 60 years on. Thank you, thank you for sponsoring me...and please put in a good word to him upstairs for me on the day. Sam X
