Community Sanitation for Uganda

Event dates: 4th August 2011 – 31st December 2011

Vanessa Riley is raising money for Operation Orphan

My story

The urban slum community of Nabigyo Upper is in desperate need of safer toilets and places to wash. Members of the urban slum community of Nabigyo Upper currently use pit latrines which consist of a square, rectangular or circular pit dug into the ground, covered by a cover slab or floor, with a hole through which excreta fall into the pit. Sometimes a seat or squat hole with footrests is installed. The latrine is often covered with a shelter and sometimes fitted with a door.

Building new toilets in this community will have a dramatically positive effect not only on the orphans and vulnerable children living in the slum but also the adults caring for them. Each unit will provide two toilets with extra space for washing. The pits underneath will be dug deep and properly lined. The building itself will be a permanent brick structure with walls, a door and a roof, significantly reducing the risk of flies and mosquitoes. Once full (which is expected to take approximately two years) the toilets are emptied. Chemical tablets in the toilets will reduce the risk of infection from flies and mosquitoes even further.

These toilets will improve the health and quality of life of the families living in the slum and will also reduce the risk of accidents involving small children. Operation Orphan actively involves members of the slum community in the construction of these toilets, such as digging the hole and taking responsibility for the ongoing cleaning and maintenance (i.e. application of chemical tablets) once each unit has been built.

Each unit costs £500 to build and our aim is to raise the funds for 20 permanent community toilets to be built over a 3 year period, vastly improving the health and safety of the children in the area. To date, we have received funding for the first two toilets, one of which is already built and the second one is almost finished.
