Claire Pennyfather is raising money for GORLIN SYNDROME GROUP

My story

I am taking part in this years Greater Manchester Marathon on Sunday 28th April. This will be my first ever marathon and is definitely the biggest challenge I have ever set myself.

I will be running in support of the Gorlin Syndrome Group and hoping to raise as much money as possible. The Gorlin Syndrome Group was founded by my late uncle Jim who sadly passed away from the rare genetic condition in 2002 aged just 51.

Jim set up the group in 1992 after he was diagnosed with Gorlin Syndrome to provide support and information to other families across the UK, Europe and America who also suffered from Gorlin Syndrome. Before the group, people where isolated, had very little information and often received inappropriate treatment because of lack of knowledge. Jim worked with hospitals and specialists which resulted in more research, knowledge sharing and improved treatment.

The condition meant that Jim suffered from multiple cysts, and skin cancer with extensive spread to other organs of the body . The condition also left him blind. He was constantly in and out of hospital having treatments and operations. Despite all the pain and difficulties Jim suffered, he was always positive, helping and caring for others, making people smile and making the most of his life. He never complained or felt sorry for himself for having this condition; he just wanted to help others and worked tirelessly to raise awareness of Gorlin Syndrome to help people receive the right treatment so that no one else would have to suffer to the extent that he did.

I want to raise as much money as possible to help support the group that he worked so hard to build so that his legacy can continue. Your support and any amount of sponsor would be greatly appreciated and would make such a difference to people and their families who are affected by Gorlin Syndrome.
