Anne Korn is raising money for The Cinnamon Trust
Woo hoo, lads and lasses!
I?ve managed to get a place on the London Royal Parks Half Marathon! I know that some of you think I?m mad but then let?s all be mad together - not meaning that you should all get your trainers on and run with me (although, really, you should)?
But support me you can, young Jedi! Yay! I am going to give myself the extra motivation boost by running for a cause!
I?ve spent some time pondering and I think I have found a great one! I am going to run this for my gran! Well, sort of.
Actually, I am running it for the Cinnamon Trust - the only specialist national charity for people in their last years and their pets. They do great stuff: they make sure that pets and their owners can stay together for as long as possible, walking dogs for housebound owners, fostering pets when owners need hospital care, fetching food, cleaning out bird cages? and things like that. They also find homes for bereaved pets, they help people find care homes and retirement housing happy to accept residents with pets and basically do their utmost to alleviate suffering for both people and their pets.
Why am I running for them? Well, apart from the fact that this is a great cause under any circumstance, I?ve already mentioned my gran. She was actually my great-gran (yes, that?s right!) ? an amazing woman! I spent a lot of time at her place growing up. My parents were both working full time and I didn't like the nursery very much so my great-grandmother looked after me. After raising her own children, she basically went straight on to help raising her grandchildren and then us, her great-grandchildren. My brother and I (as well as various cousins) spent much of our time with her. She played with us, cooked for us, changed our nappies ? she even learned my lines with me when I was this wee thing playing dwarves in amateur theatre productions?
My gran passed away some years ago ? almost 96 years old ? and she was able to stay in her own home until the very end, surrounded by family. I don't think that things can get much better as people get older than they did for my gran but I know that this isn't the case for a lot of other people and I would like to lend some support to them. That was the initial idea anyway, also because when I decided to take this marathon thing seriously, I had just read about the sometimes appalling conditions in old people?s homes. Looking for charities that support elderly people, I was excited to find out that I could potentially run for a cause that involves animals at the same time. Some of you may know that I love all furry things to the point of refusing to eat them but I also know how tremendously important pets can become for a person's life and wellbeing. I grew up with pets and since moving to London, I miss my cat like crazy (she now keeps my mum company in Germany).
I think that the Cinnamon Trust is doing a great thing by helping people and their beloved animals stay together ? and by looking after the animals when the owner can no longer do so themselves. I imagine that a lot of suffering is alleviated for both people and pets because of this and this is something that I can fully and whole-heartedly support. This is where you come in because I do hope that you will help me do it!
So, here?s to gran, to my cat(s), to the Cinnamon Trust and all their helpers and to you! I hope you will all support me in this (and that some of you will stand by the roadside on the day I battle through 13.1 miles (21k) to cheer me on and give me jelly bellies sans gelatine ;))
I heart you, people!
Anne
