Britain's Most Inspiring Fundraiser Nominee

Finalist - Freddie Knoller

Nominated by: Benjamin Morrison, who works for Jewish Care

Charity:Jewish Care

Reason for nomination:

"Freddie is an inspiration. An optimist, a person who never takes "no" for an answer, a man who, aged 86, after living through every atrocity of the Holocaust, still travels the UK raising funds for the continued support of his fellow survivors and giving lectures at schools across the land."

Actions:

A "tourist guide" and pimp for Nazi soldiers in Paris, a member of the French Resistance who was betrayed to the authorities by a spurned lover, and a man who survived Auschwitz - not the usual background for a fundraiser!

"I had to take care of myself - I was number one. I had one mission only: to survive and to tell the world about the barbarism of the "cultured" people of Germany."

Freddie Knoller's single-mindedness and determination helped him survive the unthinkable and unimaginable during the Holocaust. It is this same drive which makes him even more passionate and enthusiastic about raising funds for Jewish Care's Holocaust Survivors Centre in Hendon, North London. A truly remarkable man who, at the age of 86, has to date raised over 200,000 for services for his fellow Holocaust survivors and those former refugees who managed to escape from Nazi persecution.

Freddie thinks nothing of writing to royalty and world famous musicians, securing their services for fundraising events. Itzahk Perlman recently gave his support for Freddie's efforts and HRH Princess Alexandra was the guest of honour when Maxim Vengeroff gave a virtuoso performance. There can be no better fundraiser than a beneficiary of a charity's help and through his fundraising efforts Freddie has raised the profile of the Holocaust Survivors Centre, a "second home" for many of its 650 members, and in doing so has formed a fundraising committee of fellow survivors to continue to spread the message about hatred and intolerance.
