Abbey Tax 20 - Young Carers

Event dates: 1st January 2017 – 30th June 2018

Robert Fisher is raising money for Warwickshire Young Carers

My story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page in support of Young Carers.

As part of our AbbeyTax20 initiative we are carrying out 20 charitable acts in support of four very worthy charities. One of our charities is Young Carers, part of the Warwickshire Carers Support Service.

Young Carers provide support for children as young as 6 years old who are actively caring for a member of their family or household.

The Young Carers Project supports young people, and often their family, in many ways. It can be as simple as having someone to listening to them, providing a safe environment where they can be a child with no additional responsibilities for an hour or two, having some fun or even ensuring that they are attending school and providing a Peer Mentoring service.

All of this comes at a cost and there is no government or local authority funding for any young carers under the age of 8. If a young person is caring then that doesn?t suddenly start at the age of 8 and in reality children are responsible for the personal care and medical needs of parents.

In order to support children between the ages of 6 and 8 then Young Carers have to raise their own funds. In the last 10 years there has been an 83% increase in carers in this age group.

None of us want to think that this happens, but the reality is that it does and so we are supporting Young Carers in our year of charity to try and make life just a little bit easier and to help in giving some of those children more of the childhood we all know they deserve.
